  • Greetings, Gratefuls!
Hoping that this Key-Mail finds you smack dab in the middle of a glorious moment! If it doesn't feel glorious then I have a question for you. What thought would feel better?

Recently a woman called me and told me that her son "had a problem." As she anxiously continued, I was able to throw in a question that always catches folks offguard...

"Is your son unhappy?" I asked.

She told me he was not. "So, are you unhappy?" I asked.

    "Most certainly!" she replied.

"Then it sounds like you are the one with the problem."

This is a big pill to swallow, but it yields immediate, long-lasting relief to those who can swallow it! Remember, you get to choose your focus, your thoughts, your mood and your 'tude! It's fine to choose to be angry or hurt or jealous or confused - just remember there are other thoughts that feel good, waving at you from the sidelines yelling "pick me!"

My favorite movie this month is the new bookstore- only movie entitled Mother Teresa . I was in awe as I watched (all three times) how she flowed from compassion for a dying man to stubborn anger with a doctor without judging them or herself. She wasn't about saving people from death or converting them to her belief system. She was about accepting them where, as, and how they were.

One of my thoughts after viewing it was that that's why I'm "good with teens." Because, in my eyes, they are "good" with me.

Along that line, I'm thrilled to announce that our new High-Ways Handbooks for 6-12 grades are now available for your son or daughter's school or youth group! See below for details on how to get your copy of 44 teen- tested activities for "Get the Picture" or order an entire year of handbooks and save $$$!

My thanks to the teachers who brought them to life and my co-author, principal Cindy Osterloh.

Also be sure to try out my new "Gratitude Sand- Wish" exercise in the article below. It is deliciously delightful!

Finally, we have a fun "Day Off" retreat day September 23rd. Bring family and friends and you'll hear my new 8 to GREAT program, two great guest speakers, AND enjoy a free massage!

Till next month, happy fall - ing in love with life!
    MK

    From High-Ways Handbook #7
    - The Gratitude Drill

    Possible Grade Levels: 6-12
    Supplies Needed: none
    Time Allotment: 4-5 minutes
    Teacher Prep: none
    Learning Strategies: S/V

    1) Ask for five or six volunteers to come up to the front of the room. Have them form a circle while you explain how the Gratitude Drill works: The person with the longest hair begins by saying one thing theyre grateful for, then the person to their left shares a new/fresh gratitude in three seconds or less. If they cant think of one before the teacher claps his/her hands or hits a gong or makes a buzzer noise, then they have to sit down. (If someone says, my family, it is still all right for someone to say, my little brother.)

    2) Give a prize to anyone who is still standing 4-5 minutes later. (Be prepared - the second or third time you do this, you will not get anyone out for the entire five minutes, so youll need lots of prizes!)

    3) When you're finished, if you have time, have the students list five times during the week that they could do a gratitude stream or drill. (Right before a game is a great answer and has been proven to improve performance.)

    4) Have the students fill out a Feedback Form.

Note: Students are phenomenal at this activity and it always feels good, so do it often with different students each time!

    High-Way 1 #7 - The Gratitude Sand- Wish
    Possible Grade Levels: 6-12
    Recommended Grade Levels: 9-12
    Supplies Needed: none
    Time Allotment: 5 15 minutes
    Teacher Prep: none
    Learning Strategies: R/W, ID, S/V

    1) Explain to the class how to do a Gratitude Sand-Wish with a partner:
    A. Gratitudes: Share 3 things youre grateful/thankful for in your life now. (If students are having trouble thinking of something, have them imagine living in a tent in the Saraha dessert for a month. When they return, what are they grateful for?)
    B. Wishes: Now share 3 specific things youd like to experience or have i.e. Ill do really well on my test. Ill get a compliment today. Ill own a Mercedes Benz someday.
    C. Gratitudes: Then PRETEND that your wishes have already come true and share how grateful/thankful you are that your wishes have happened!

For example: One day a friend of mine was sharing how sad she was that she couldn't find a necklace she had lost. I encouraged her to do the Gratitude Sand-Wish and she began, "I'm really grateful that I'm here talking with you, and I'm really grateful that I have a good sense of humor and I'm really grateful that the sun is shining!" (She felt better already!)

Then she shared, "I only want one thing. I want to find my necklace!" Then she did her final gratefuls for the very thing she was asking for, "I'm so grateful to have found my necklace, now I can wear it to the wedding I'm going to this weekend. I will feel so beautiful!"

She found the necklace in a pocket of her purse that evening!

    Discuss with your partner:
    1. Why do you think the Gratitude Sand-Wish works?
    2. How did it feel to be grateful (A)?
    3. Was it easy or hard to think of some wishes (B)?
    4. How did it feel to Act as if your wishes had come true and be grateful (C)?
    5. Its been said in this program that When you feel good, good things happen. Do you agree?
    6. Would you be willing to start your day tomorrow with this Sand-Wish? Why or why not?

As long as youre going to think anyway, think big.
